What is a BIT Inspection?
The California Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act (also known as the Biennial Inspection of Terminals Program or BIT) was enacted in 1988 by CA legislature to alleviate the growing number of truck related collisions. All motor vehicles with a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs. must complete a safety inspection every 90 days. Inspections must be documented and reports must be retained for at least two years. Avoid being placed out of service during roadside inspections or being subject to heavy fines and penalties!
Applicability
DOT INSPECTIONS
DOT Inspection is a Department of Transportation safety inspection. The safety inspection is required Federally and to be performed annually for all Commercial Motor Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of more than 10,001 pounds that travel outside of California (Interstate). This requirement involves each segment of a combination vehicle, and the inspection is required every 12 months or 25,000 miles to stay in compliance with federal, state and local laws. The Annual DOT Vehicle Inspections (the inspections in which you receive a sticker on the CMV indicating that it has passed inspection) must be conducted by a Qualified Inspector and includes the inspection includes the inspection of the interior, exterior, chassis, engine, electric, trailers, tires and brakes. All vehicles carrying heavy loads, passengers and goods are required to be inspected for the safety of drivers, passengers and the public under the Commercial Vehicle Inspections Program. Any violations may result in a driver being taken out of commission for driving. Finding no violations is the most desired outcome. If a driver doesn’t have violations, they receive a CVSA decal that is good for three months. This lets other inspecting officers know that a CMV passed inspection recently. Violations may count against Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) scores for both the driver and the carrier. If a driver receives an OOS violation, they cannot drive again until all violations are addressed and documented properly.
